Bike to Work Month

The World Health Organisation recommends 150 minutes of exercise a week to stay healthy. That’s only 20 minutes a day, but it can still be hard to fit regular workouts into a busy schedule. One simple way of getting your daily dose of exercise is by integrating it into your routine – for example by commuting by bike. Leaving your car at home also helps reduce carbon dioxide and goes easy on the environment. Moving around outdoors also strengthens the immune system and can help prevent illness in the future.

Prompted by these benefits, the „Ride Your Bike to Work“ initiative was brought into being in 2011, to promote biking among office workers during the warm months. The challenge: ride your bike to work on at least 50 per cent of your daily commutes in May. To stay motivated, you do it as a team. Successful teams automatically get entered into a lucky draw and can win nice prices. Progress can be recorded via the website or the mobile app, which automatically tracks all distances cycled via GPS.

Three Mondial teams in Vienna took part in the initiative, defied the elements and got spinning at every opportunity. They covered a total distance of 581 kilometres, saved 252 Euros, 87 kilos of carbon dioxide, and burned 9.871 calories. This placed us at mid-level of the overall company ranking.

Not a bad result, even though no-one has won any prices yet. “Still, it was a lot of fun and we will keep biking even after May” the team members say. As organising office for Green Meetings, we are required to offer bicycle parking on the company grounds – so our bikes are kept in top condition for future adventures.
